Learn to grow your own produce at home… affordably!

Do you think, like me, that you might want to save money in these hard times by growing your produce at home, maybe in water, like these Aztecs did.  The chinampas built around Lake Texcoco in Mexico around the 16th century, were essentially small artificial islands constructed in shallow water. (Thanks to Quora answer experts for the info). When I went online looking for explanations, I found so much I had to physically tear my eyes away or I would have never finished my page. If you are interested in the ins and outs of the Aztec floating gardens, just ask ‘Mr Google, or Bing etc, about them. Fascinating.

Or maybe in pots?? It can be done, even indoors. My first attempt as a total newbie had tomato plant reaching the ceiling! Much to my delight, so the picture below is just the start of what you can do, pot or nutrient water. and all you have to buy is the soil or nutrients as you have the water in your taps. And of course, the seeds of the vegetables you want to grow. I started with tomatoes, capsicums and courgettes. This time I have some seeds in little blocks from last season and am looking forward to seeing what they can produce. If anything as they were last season.

My goodness! Autumn already, and my Sunflowers are in a container while they dry for me to use with the COriander and Basil leaves I dried for the pantry and to save money at the supermarket. Also, my Tomato plant is still hanging on, though it’s taking longer for the fruit to ripen now the sun is slightly weaker. But, I now have four Rock melon growing nice and large AND an Aubergine,/Eggplant which is still doing well. It will be a bit longer before I can harvest them, but I’m so pleased to have succeeded this far.

My next project will be Broad beans and Brussel sprouts. Plus, I will be picking up my new replacement car as a result of my accident in January, which means I can stop saving for that (my old car wasn’t worth much) and start saving for the big square raised bed I want for my Winter/Spring veggies. Also for the tunnel house I want to buy for my hydroponics. So an exciting few months to plan for.I As always, If you want to comment, even criticise 🙂 please email me on hilary@affordablehydrogreen.com or gosportgal@gmail.com. I will be happy to respond within a couple of days.
