SInce my encounter with depression lasy year, I have become pretty focused on better looking after my health.
Catching a fairly minor, but very irritating disease, twice in a few months, sent me to Mr Google, among other places, Government advisery sites as well. One of the findings was that it could possibly be connected to the medications I am taking, (not supplements), actual medications, I could be lacking in Vitamin B12. I’m inclined to accept this as I remember my late husband, who suffered from, among other things, Type 2 Diabetes, taking metformin and he needed Vitamin B12 injections several times a year. I have also been diagnosed with this disease and on medical advice have, since early last year been taking Metformin.
DARN!!
I have just researched some of the concerns I have experienced lately, -tired all the time, no energy, sore gums (not teeth). AND incidents of what affected me last year. Surprise, surprise, all symptoms suffered by people taking this medicatiion long term. Naturally enough I am not happy about my early findings, so after seing a couple of comments on the ability to reverse this disease, will find out as much as I can. I will also buy a blood sugar tester so that I can check my blood sugar at home and not rely on the doctors. Sadly, it seems to my eyes that these days doctors are more inclined to prescribe some drug or other rather than try to find other remedies.
I already watch my diet and walk every day, also have resistance and weight exercises that I am now performing every day as well. After checking several Health sites, the concensus is that yes, Diabetes can be reversed. But as the disease, once diagnosed is classed as a chronic disease, doctors do not used words like reversed or cured, but do, reluctantly, accept that it can be “in remission”. To achieve this condition, it is necessary for blood sugar levels to remain normal for at least three months without using glucose-lowering medications.
Something that will help accelerate the process is, if you’re overweight, as I am at the moment :-), is to reduce your weight by around 15kg. I am now walking every day, beginning weight resistance exercises, and making sure to eat whole foods, avoiding all the yummy’treat foods’. Difficult this, as living alone I don’t have anyone here who will say, “Are you REALLY going to eat that?” Except me and I don’t always listen to me in these circumstances 🙁
I have determined to eat foods that contain Vitamin B12, foods of animal origin, including fish, meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products. I already eat these foods so will continue to do so on my new regime. Also I will buy some Multivitamin tablits to hopefully supplement my diet if it is lacking in this, especially as Metformin appears to actually reduce this vitamin in my body. I will check my Iron levels as well, as I read that lack of iron causes tiredness, which is something I have been suffering from.
Found an easy peasy recipe for chicken, will give this one a go when I get some chicken next shop.
Creamy Chicken Breasts
Chicken breast
2 breasts, bone and skin removed
Cayenne pepper
A pinch of Spices, red, or cayenne pepper
Italian dressing
1/2 cup Salad dressing, reduced fat
3/4 cup Caesar salad dressing
Directions are based on the original recipe of 4 servings
Step 1
In a large glass dish, mix together the creamy salad dressing, Italian-style salad dressing and cayenne pepper. Add chicken breasts and toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate. Marinate for 1 to 2 hours.
Step 2
Preheat grill for high heat, and lightly oil grate.
Step 3
Remove chicken breasts from marinade, and grill for 6 to 8 minutes each side, until no longer pink and juices run clear.
I’m looking forward to trying this one myself and the beauty of it is, depending on what vegetables you put with it, you can make it last at least 2 meals. At least I can because I live alone and 2 chicken breasts will go a long way for me. Possibly even to 3 meals.
Give it a try yourself and let me know how you get on? Any questions on this post? I have so many questions and options running through my head, if you have the same or similar, please email me at gosportgal@gmail.com.
