Wow! what a week!
Last Monday, I was taken out for a lovely birthday lunch by some special church friends. What a wonderful treat. Then I had a brain episode and from Tuesday till Friday, I was out doing something or other, all triggered, I am sure by my impulsive response to beautiful sunshine on a day with nothing pre-planned. 🙂
Thankfully, after a good weekend, which included the current Alpha class, a time when we can catch up with friends who have similar inclinations and fill up on yummy savouries and cakes. Today, it is back to normal, only one trip planned for the whole week. So, today, I am walking down to the village to get myself a coffee and slice from a local take-away cafe, my regular haunt having closed, to reopen in a larger venue across the road larger premises in the middle of the month.Â
Because things have been pretty hectic lately I hadn’t checked on my container veggie beds before yesterday. Lovely! Just had a quick look yesterday evening and found plenty of growth. Beans, Peas, Carrots, Cabbage and Brocolli. Will be inspecting and photographing shortly, after I get my coffee.
Well, as they say, the best laid plans go agley.
After getting so far, the phone went, followed by visitors who took over the rest of the day. Enjoyable, but disruptive. However, I’m pretty much back on track again and am happy to report that I have flowers on my Beans and Peas and when I looked closely I saw that I have baby carrots. So exciting as I’ve never grown carrots before, so it looks as though I will get a good harvest this season. Also my Cabbages and Broccolli are growing beautifully, although with those I will have to wait as they are a Winer veg really, not just Autumn. My Aubergine planted just after Christmas (part of Christmas present) is still growing well, although after some research, I don’t expect any further fruit. However, as I have never grown it before I will let it keep going just to see how long it lasts now that we are officially in Winter up here in Northland. I am amazed how long my Asparagus plants keep growing. The information I sourced online, said with new plants to just let them go until they die off in the Winter, which I am doing, but I now have masses of waving fronds and so far, only on of them has begun to change colour. Still, I can wait as I love Asparagus.
Just discovered that the painful throat I have been suffering the past few days is probably Tonsilitis. For goodness sake! I haven’t had that since I was a youngster. Means I’m feeling a bit sorry for myself, but I have taken some Ibuprofen so at least the pain has disappeared, although I can feel it starting to sneak back in again. Ah well, I can wait a while and take some more with my dinner, later. Hopefully that will help till tomorrow. Feeling pretty washed out this mrning, so am taking some Lemsip and going back to bed for an hour. Thankfully I don’t have to set out for Warkworth till 1pm. More later. Hah. Woke up with a stuffy nose, so probably a head cold rather than Tonsillitis. Hope so. Still need the painkillers though, grrr.
Anyway, feeling a bit brighter today, so will take it a bit slower, build up my strength. After checking yesterday I am really pleased with progress in my veggie beds, but am having to be patient waiting for the carrots. I can see lovely orange heads attached to the feathery green fronds and am itching to pull one up to see how far the orange goes underground. I really have to work on patience sometimes. I took a couple of photos yesterday when I got home, so will add the best to this post. Don’t know if the flowers show on the Beans and Peas, but I can’t wait for them to turn into babies.
As another update bites the dust, I hope you are enjoying my musings. No recipe today, but my mind has not been as sharp as I want just now, hopefully next post I will be feeling a bit better. As usual however, if you have any comments you would like to make, please send them to the email addresses below. And know, I will always reply. hilary@affordablehydrogreens.com, or gosportgal@gmail.com
