Optimism Renewed

Today my Broad Bean and Pea plants are finally big enough to need staking. Both plants have flowers and I saw a small pea pod growing yesterday. Also I saw a baby brocolli floret nestled in the middle of the the top leaves of that plant. My carrots seem almost large enough to pick, even if only to thin them out.

This past week has been pretty dire as my bout of Tonsilitis became a full on head cold and since then, I have felt pretty sorry for myself. Thankfully, I can honesstly say that I’m feeling human again. The weather is quite pleasant, no rain so going outside to do some checking on the carrots.

It is so good to feel that I’m actually recovered and also that, having checked out my finances, I realise that I will be able to go to Mitre 10 and look into the raised garden bed suppies I need for the big one I’m planning to settle outside. My dream is to have a hydroponic bed and Winter produce bed down within the next couple of weeks. I believe that if I buy the actual hardware and set that up, then the pension week following, I’ll be able to fill both with soil and, in the case of the hydroponic tunnel, with single beds which I think I will be able to eventually fill with nutrients for my plants. I will speak to someone at the Hydroponic shop in Whangarei to find out the most practical way to grow my produce and which do best in a hydroponic environment.

It feels so good, to have my brain back in action again, seems far too long since I have felt that way.

Also I just had a eureka moment. In that I have just realised that my dream for my garden is actually closer than I thought. For the past few weeks I have been so focused on my injured car :-(, my less than perfect health 🙁 and my savings for my trip overseas in two years, that I lost sight of the NOW. My overseaas trip is not for two years, so the savings I have already achieved will comfortably cover the excess to the repairers and still leave me enough, if I continue as I am going now, to get both tunnel house and large veggie bed bought and filled in time for the coming Spring and Summer.

Oh boy! I just checked what plants I can grow hydroponically and now can hardly wait to get my tunnel house and start growing them. The great information is that I can grow through the Winter in there. Yay. I think I may well go over to Whangarei next pension day and chat with the people in the Hydroponic store over there and my son at the garden centre. I picked a couple of my carrots, they are globe carrots, I had never seen them before, so I will cook them in my next meal tomorrow.

Hard to believe, sitting here watching the extra traffic brought by the repairs on the state highway north, that we are in Winter already. Another week and we will reach the shortest day, always a good day if you’re waiting for the growing season. Which of course I am.

It certainly looks a bit cold out there, but it never gets that cold up here in the north of the country. I am planning to take a walk down to the village later today as this morning I have to take the car up to the repairers and get it booked in.

I will check everything out and let you know what I decide on for the upcoming season in my next post. Quite exciting really not knowing what I will actually buy and when I will be able to get my new garden beds. The next thing on my agenda is new glasses as I was pretty surprised when I had my eye test for my licence renewal. That will be next week, and means that I will then know how long it will be before I can buy my new garden. Very grey and overcast today, with some rain forecast. Hopefully it won’t last too long.

And here I am at the end of another burble and looking forward to my next venture into what I can have (grow) for my future self, while saving money at the same time. Anyway, as usual, if you would like to make any comments please feel free. Email addresses also as usual, which I read every day, hilary@affordablehydrogreens.com, or gosportgal@gmail.com. God bless and have a great weekend, Hilary.
